How the Demat Account Comparison Calculator works

Four charges determine most of a demat account's real cost: account opening (mostly free industry-wide now), Annual Maintenance Charges (AMC) (often waived in year 1, then billed yearly), delivery brokerage per executed buy/sell order, and DP (Depository Participant) charges — a per-scrip, per-day fee charged only when you sell shares out of your demat holding, regardless of quantity sold.

None of these are SEBI-fixed rates — every figure here is broker-published pricing that can and does change, so the "as of" date above matters. The estimate calculator applies your expected number of buy-and-sell round trips per year against each broker's AMC and per-order charges to show which is genuinely cheapest for your usage, not just on paper — a broker with zero AMC but higher DP charges can cost more than one with a small AMC once you trade frequently, and vice versa.

Disclosure:the "Open Account" links for Zerodha, Upstox, Angel One and Groww are affiliate/partner links — ipomarket.in may earn a commission if you open an account through them, at no extra cost to you. This never affects the fee figures shown, which come from each broker's own published rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DP charge and why does it only apply on selling?
DP (Depository Participant) charges are levied by your demat provider when shares LEAVE your account — i.e. on a delivery sell — never on a buy. It's charged once per company (scrip) per day regardless of how many shares of that company you sell that day.
Which broker is cheapest overall?
There's no single answer — it depends on how often you trade. A broker with zero AMC can still end up costlier than one with a small annual fee if its DP or brokerage charges are higher and you trade frequently. Use the estimate calculator with your own expected activity to see which wins for you.
Are these the exact current fees for every broker?
These are the broker's own published rates as of the date shown above — brokers change pricing without much notice, so always confirm the current rate on the broker's own website before opening an account.
Is opening a demat account through this page's links different from going directly to the broker?
No — you get the same account, same fees, same process. The marked links are affiliate/partner links that may earn ipomarket.in a commission at no extra cost to you; this doesn't change what you pay the broker.
Do these charges affect my IPO applications?
IPO applications themselves are free at every broker — SEBI prohibits charging for the application process. These charges apply to secondary-market trading (buying/selling on the exchange) and account maintenance, which matters once you're trading beyond just IPO applications.
