Best time to buy gold in India

Gold demand peaks during Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and the wedding season (Oct–Feb), pushing prices higher. The best buying windows are typically the monsoon months (Jul–Sep) and the post-Diwali correction. Track 30-day moving averages and look for dips of 2–3% below the recent peak. Buying in small lots over 6–12 months (rupee-cost averaging) reduces timing risk for long-term gold investors.

How IBJA rates differ from jeweller prices

IBJA publishes the wholesale benchmark used across India. The price you actually pay at a jeweller adds 8–25% in making charges (based on design complexity), 3% GST on the total, and dealer margin. For coins and bars, the markup is much smaller (1–3%). Always ask for an itemised bill that separates metal cost from making charges and GST.

GST on gold purchases

GST on gold jewellery is 3% on the total bill (metal + making charges). Gold coins and bars also attract 3% GST. Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued by the RBI are GST-exempt and offer an additional 2.5% annual interest, making them tax-efficient for long-term holdings.
