What are Dividends?

A dividend is a cash payment made by a company to its shareholders from its profits. Indian companies typically declare an interim dividend mid-year and a final dividend after the annual results. Some companies also declare special one-time dividends.

To receive a dividend you must own the shares before the ex-date. Settlement is T+1 in India, so buying at least one trading day before the record date typically qualifies you. Payment usually happens within 30 days of the record date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ex-date and record date?

Ex-date is one trading day before record date. Buy before ex-date so the trade settles by record date. Shares bought on ex-date or later do not qualify for the dividend.

How are dividends taxed in India?

Since FY 2020-21, dividends are added to your total income and taxed at your slab rate. Companies deduct 10% TDS if your annual dividend from that company exceeds ₹5,000.

What is dividend yield?

Dividend yield = (annual dividend per share / current share price) × 100. A stock at ₹100 paying ₹5 dividend has a 5% yield. High-yield stocks include Coal India, ITC, Power Grid, and ONGC.

Interim vs final vs special dividend?

Interim is declared mid-year by the board. Final is declared at the AGM after year-end. Special is a one-time payout from extraordinary profits, asset sales, or surplus cash.

When will the dividend be credited to my account?

Per SEBI rules, dividends must be paid within 30 days of declaration. Listed companies typically pay within 15-20 days of the record date via direct bank credit.
